Vibram FiveFingers:
The Missing Link?
First there were Birkenstocks.
Then there were Crocs.
Now there's a whole new kind of footwear that tries to fuse comfort with U-G-L-Y: Vibram FiveFingers!
My daughter told me she'd never let me in the house wearing VFFs.
My wife said she never let me out of the house wearing VFFs.
What's an inquisitive fitness buff like me to do?
I'll spare you the details of the horse-trading that went on with the significant ladies in my life before I was allowed to procure these things that look like primate feet.
I'll admit that I was skeptical when I first read about VFFs. I thought I sensed a whiff of snake-oil.
Many in the kettlebell community were especially fond of them, however, which piqued my curiosity. I was interested in trying to replicate the barefoot exercise experience I'd enjoyed for three years while working out with kettlebells on the beach in California. My move to Colorado dramatically reduced the barefoot opportunities, and I only realized belatedly just how partial I'd gotten to barefooting it. Enter the VFF....
I'll admit these aren't for everyone; they're not fashion forward by any means. But the bottom line is I dig 'em. They feel very cool; they do replicate the barefoot feel I'd come to take for granted when working out in warmer climes.
I also like the fact that you can wash them; usually when I wear shoes without socks I can go about 4-5 wears before my shoes become the "outdoor-only" variety on account of their putridity. Not so the VFFs. They're specially treated to resist foot odor; when that resistance begins to wear, just toss your VFFs in the washer and voila!
if you're lucky enough to work out in a climate that allows you to go barefoot year round, you probably wouldn't have much of a need for these. But if you want a barefoot experience without frost-bite, thorns, and slivers, then VFFs are just what the doctor ordered!
